Expect to see some local faces on the set of upcoming Australian film “Strangerland”, being filmed in Canowindra.
Alongside Hollywood A-listers Nicole Kidman and Hugo Weaving, Craig Drayton and Cass Bird have nabbed themselves roles as extras in the indie thriller written by Fiona Seres and Michael Kinirons.
The film, financed by Screen Australia, will follow parents Catherine and Matthew Parker, who are driven to the point of madness when their two teenage children go missing in the Australian outback.
With filming to start next month, Mr Drayton and Ms Bird are excited about their first appearance in a feature film.
“I don’t really know what is to be expected of me yet, as they probably won’t be getting in touch with me again until a day or so before they need me,” Mr Drayton said.
“Most of the time films are shot in the big cities, so I think it’s great that they’ve chosen to do this film in a small country town and have given locals the opportunity to be a part of it. Who knows, it could encourage other companies to shoot their projects in small country communities as well.”
“I think it’s a great help to the region. Not only is it a bit of a draw card for tourists, but it brings in extra people for a little while during the filming which can only be positive for the area overall,” Ms Bird added.
“It’s great that they use locals for the production as it gives the locals paid acting experience as well as encourages positive relationships between the locals and the production team.”
While they may not get a chance to rub shoulders with the stars, the pair are looking forward to seeing how things are done on a real set.
“Everybody has to start somewhere. Did you know Ben Affleck and Charlize Theron started out as extras? Now they’re both Oscar winners. I’ve wanted to be an actor for as long as I can remember, so if this could lead to something bigger, that would be a dream come true,” Mr Drayton said.
“Maybe I should take a pen and paper with me just in case I get the opportunity for an autograph.”
“I think for me it’s more of a case of ticking something off my bucket list. It will be really fun to be able to say I was in a movie with stars as notable as the ones in ‘Strangerland’. It’s very exciting,” Ms Bird said.
